Just a hunch. Because you’re human. At some point, you have…or you will, take a GOOD thing and make it the ULTIMATE thing. A lot of times, we make this mistake with how we define ourselves, or how we want others to see us.
Like, I’m a DJ. Even before I was a Christian, DJ-ing was in my blood. Is it a good thing that I’m all-in on it? Not if I am a DJ first, and a Christian second.
You probably don’t have to look far to see this play out in your life, or with somebody close to you. The world is slicing us up into a million little corners, and cheering us on when we define ourselves from the corner. Could be something like skin color, political affiliation, our favorite hobbies (gaming?), and so on.
Celebrating some those things CAN be good. But the enemy has a subtle way of helping us slide this stuff in front of Jesus. So instead of being a Jesus follower first and everything else second, we make the second thing the ultimate thing people know about us/we say about ourselves.
Here are some quotes to help you keep the main thing the main thing!
1 Peter 2:9, NIV: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
1 Corinthians 12:27, NLT: “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”
Galatians 3:27-28, NIV: “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
When people in your life see Jesus in you, and how all the good things about you flow from Him, they’ll be drawn to Him. In our sliced and diced world, I can’t think of anything more powerful to bring us back together.
