NTEG:
Listener Powered BOOST. It’s NTEG.
Nikki:
And ya girl, Nikki.
NTEG:
We rocking with the awesome, the amazing, they’re insurmountable Hulvey. How you doing, brother?
Hulvey:
Good. Those some big words, man. I don’t even know what insurmountable means, but nice to be here.
NTEG:
Large and in charge.
Hulvey:
Hey, I’m serving them the biggest.
NTEG:
Amen.
Hulvey:
As BigBreeze says, the biggest.
Nikki:
You’ve been selling out shows city to city.
NTEG:
Woo woo.
Nikki:
My question is what does “beautiful” mean to Hulvey?
Hulvey:
Yeah. Oh, man, I can get into that all day. Yeah. For me, I’ll rewind. When I was making this tour, the first half of it, even the first three quarters, I was making it all about me, and God convicted me. Because the name was The Beautiful Tour, I was going off of the songs I made, that whole vibe. He convicted me like, “Hey, man, this needs to be about me.”
The word beautiful for me, I go back to that studio session where I was making a song. To me, it’s just what I think, the word I think about when I think of God, like when I look outside and see the trees in the sky. Beautiful isn’t just the way it looks, but it’s the one behind it. He is beautiful.
For me, that’s his definition. It’s really cool because I feel like … Even my son’s name, Memphis, there’s a meaning of the word beautiful in his name. It’s really crazy. We’re in Memphis right now.
NTEG:
Yes. Yes. Yeah.
Hulvey:
That’s where he got his name from, from a trip went on here.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
It’s cool how everything kind of all points back to Him, but how it leaks into us, his beauty leaks into all of us.
NTEG:
Yeah. Selling out show after show, people singing every word of your songs, man. It’s got to be an amazing feeling. What’s the most beautiful thing that God has presented to you on this tour?
Hulvey:
Man, the most beautiful thing. Goodness.
NTEG:
You don’t know what to choose from.
Hulvey:
I would say there’s a couple of things, but one is just the humbling, experiencing some moments that humbled me. Two days in a row, on the festivals after the St. Louis show, my mic went out both shows in a row. I really got convicted about pride, about just choosing to humble myself under his hand.
In that, I started seeing Him move. I was like, “Oh, man, people are coming up to me. We don’t have merch with us, nothing. They’re just coming up to me asking about, talking about God, talking about what was on their heart.” I’m like, “Oh, okay.”
I think the humbling moments has been one thing. Another thing has been, honestly, it’s really simple, but hearing people, like a lot of people, singing to Him together with songs that aren’t like, How Great Is Our God.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
New songs that are hip-hop, because I love hip-hop.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
To hear people worshiping to it is nuts. That’s been really encouraging. Every time I do Altar every night, that’s been a highlight moment. So beautiful to me because I’m seeing people connect with God to stuff that started off being made in my bedroom, my producer’s bedroom. You know what I mean?
NTEG:
Yep. Yep.
Hulvey:
Just really crazy to me. Yeah.
NTEG:
It’s beautiful. Pun intended.
Nikki:
Would you ever do an altar call, actually bring people on stage and just have them profess their life to God and confess their-
Hulvey:
Oh, yeah.
Nikki:
Have you done that at any show?
Hulvey:
Yeah. One time we did Holy Spirit and there was three hours of baptisms. The whole show got stopped. We just had three hours of baptisms at the show. Yeah, I’ll never forget. We were in New Jersey and the pastor was like, “Hey, man, we want to do something different, man. We want to do baptisms to your song Holy Spirit.” I was like, “All right.”
Well, when we ended up doing it, we didn’t even get through the song. I mean, people … I got baptized. We all just chose just to … Even though I’ve been baptized before, it was more the idea of just submission to God.
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah. [inaudible].
Hulvey:
It was like, dang. Man, I had no clue it was going to be like that, three hours.
Nikki:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
The pastor repenting in front of people, growing, him being challenged. Somebody came from outside the church, got baptized. Just crazy. Yeah, most definitely, that’s what we on.
If something happens like that, I’m never going to try to … I’m human, so maybe sometimes, but I will try not to get in the way of what God wants to do.
I got a special feeling about this one tonight, so I’m really … I’m amped.
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah.
Hulvey:
There’s no telling what he’s going to do.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
Sometimes a show can just go smooth as all get out, and yet God will use that. I don’t know what he’s trying to do, but I just know what’s in my spirit. It’s Him telling me something’s going to be beautiful, so I’m hype.
Nikki:
I’m sticking around to the end, because with you saying that, I’m like, “Okay, God, we’re here.” Morning show. This is a new thing for us. I moved to St. Louis … Moved from North Carolina to St. Louis, so this is all like a full circle moment.
Hulvey:
Oh, wow. sheesh.
Nikki:
I was telling you the other day, you’re the first CHH artist that I heard. I heard Can’t Tell It All. I’m going to keep it real. I was smoking my vape, and when I heard you say that your homie threw his whole vape in the lake, I was like, “Lord, what do I do? Let me get one more hit.”
Hulvey:
[inaudible].
Nikki:
No, I’m being like …
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah.
Nikki:
To be here, to be at Boost, and you’re the first CHH concert and you were the first CHH artist that … I heard you through Instagram.
Hulvey:
[inaudible].
Nikki:
I heard you. Someone posted your music on a reel and I heard you. I was like, “Dang, he is … Yo, he live right now. He’s spitting.”
NTEG:
[inaudible].
Hulvey:
That’s amazing.
NTEG:
I was like, “Yo, this is like a full circle moment.” For you to say Memphis is your son name is Memphis, this is like the place, what does Memphis actually mean to you, so people know?
Hulvey:
Oh, it’s full circle. I went on a trip to Memphis when I was like I want to say 16 or 17. I do not remember the age, but I went on a trip. The guy who led that trip is here. His name is Doug. He’s doing the merch.
NTEG:
Shout out, Doug.
Nikki:
Doug. Okay.
Hulvey:
He’s doing the merch, but really I got him here on a secret mission, on discipleship, ministry, all that.
NTEG:
Yeah. [inaudible].
Nikki:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
But he’s helping. He’s driving, doing merch. Just serving, but really, we all know why he’s really here.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
He led the trip. He was fasting and praying over that trip for months. On that trip, the moment we got to Memphis, a dude’s back got healed at the hotel. It was a lot of just really crazy stuff throughout the week, seeing demons getting casted out, like I say in Can’t Tell It All.
Nikki:
That’s the song.
Hulvey:
Yeah.
Nikki:
Okay.
Hulvey:
A lady in the gas station, I watched this man, Doug, praying over her. She’s like, flipping out, gets healed right in the gas station. I could not unsee because it was so real. It was the realest thing you’ll see. It was real.
I saw just the people that normally would get outcasted in society being taken in and taken care of. This is all outside of the purpose of the trip, because the trip was supposed to be to serve.
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah.
Hulvey:
The purpose was supposed to be to go and serve the inner city kids, which we did that, but we realized that God was always trying to do something. On that trip, I was in a bunk room and I heard Jesus speak to me and said, “Follow me.” I broke down, cried, and realized like, man, you want me to follow you. That didn’t mean I didn’t know Him before or after.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
God wasn’t trying to play the once saved, always saved, or this whole theological debate game with me. He was just like, “Hey, follow me.”
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
I was like, “Dang, I want to follow you,” so I just started going after him. That trip is where my son got his name because that was so pivotal for me.
It’s really full circle having Doug here. You know what I mean? We got a dude off the street coming to the show tonight. Just thinking about what God’s doing. I’m like, “Man.” I’m just honored to be here. I don’t care what happens.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
He’s already done enough for me to be thankful. Yeah, it’s going to be really good. I know as y’all came in, the spirits was … Everybody seemed uplifted for some reason, because some of these shows, we’re a little tired, bogged down, but tonight just feel different. I don’t know.
Nikki:
Yeah, like a boost of energy.
Hulvey:
That’s what I’m saying.
NTEG:
Boost of … That’s beautiful.
Hulvey:
Yeah, it is, man. It is. I can’t believe it. Another encouraging part for me is that, man, these are diverse audiences. This don’t look like American church.
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah.
Nikki:
Right.
Hulvey:
It’s actually diverse every show.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
I’m like, “Man, that’s what we want.” We want to see the kingdom. We don’t want to see all this cultural Christianity, all that mess.
NTEG:
Yep.
Hulvey:
Keep that. No shade to nobody, but it’s just like to go to a show where people can feel welcome …
NTEG:
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Hulvey:
My whole thing for this tour has been I want that 16-year-old girl who’s struggling with an abortion to be able to come in and be like, “Hey, I can be here. I’m in the right spot tonight. I can be here.”
NTEG:
Yeah. Yeah.
Hulvey:
“I know that I’m accepted. God’s going to speak to me.”
Nikki:
Like the real come as you are.
Hulvey:
Yeah. Yeah.
Nikki:
Like, for real, come as you are.
Hulvey:
Yeah.
Nikki:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
Yeah, that’s what it’s supposed to be. You know what I mean?
NTEG:
Yeah, yeah.
Hulvey:
I’m excited. There’s just no telling. Thank you, guys. Man, I’m thankful that y’all helped us, so, honored.
NTEG:
[inaudible]. We’re grateful.
Hulvey:
We’re grateful.
Nikki:
One last question for you. What is your favorite scripture, like that one scripture that just gives you hope?
Hulvey:
Yeah. It’s John John 17:3. For this is eternal life that you would know God in Jesus Christ [inaudible]. The reason why it’s my favorite scripture is because it lays out the definition of eternal life.
For me, growing up in church, I was told a lot about this prayer that I had to say. I said that prayer many times and never felt relief because I was like, “Jesus, come into my heart, come into my heart,” all the time, every camp, every … Crying, not crying, feeling like I’m saved, I’m not saved.
I finally realized that knowing God is eternal life. That Him paying for me, me knowing Him personally, that is eternal life. It wasn’t about just this prayer I said. It’s the fact that we know each other. That’s where the confidence comes from.
I don’t look at my wife and go, “Are you my wife or not?” I know her. We know each other. It’s like the same thing with Him, so that’s my favorite verse.
It is not what meets the eye. That verse sounds so basic. When you know what that means, that is the most pivotal truth to know that knowing God personally is eternal life. Heaven is right now. It starts now with me and Him.
NTEG:
Yeah.
Hulvey:
When I pass, I don’t want it to be a shock when I see Him. It’s like, “Nah, okay, that’s … Now I’m just putting a face to the heart that I’ve known.”
Nikki:
To the name. Yeah.
Hulvey:
Yeah.
